Build A Garden Fence - Low Cost Ideas

!±8± Build A Garden Fence - Low Cost Ideas

If you want to add a wonderful country touch to your garden, building a country style fence is not as difficult, or as expensive as it might seem. Here at The Garden Glove, we wanted to add a gothic picket style to the front garden. However, purchasing and installing 150 feet of picket fencing was NOT in the budget. So we chose to add just two sections of fencing to the corners of the front drive as accents. We also used inexpensive materials to create the fence. Using the low cost materials and keeping the amount of fencing small but in a focal point area kept costs way down. Here's how we did it.

Materials Needed

Pressure treated or cedar 2x4 lumber for posts and cross pieces

2 ½ inch screws

Quick Setting Concrete (I used 1 60 pound bag for every two posts)

Pickets

Saw

Drill

Using 2x4's instead of heavier posts saved me 50% of the cost. Pressure treated 2x4's won't rot quickly, and will give you the most bang for your buck. Do not use pressure treated lumber near edible plants.

Step 1:

Measure the height you want the posts, and then add 18 inches to 2 feet, depending on how heavy your freeze is in the winter. The harsher your winters, the deeper you should set the posts. Mark where you would like the post holes with flour. Post hole should be as far apart as you decide to cut your cross pieces. We used 8 foot 2x4's that we cut in half, so each post hole was 4 feet apart, on the outside. (On the outside refers to the outside edges of the posts being 4 feet apart.) Dig post holes 2 feet deep.

Step 2:

Place posts into holes and check to make sure all posts are at the same depth. You can check this with a level along the tops of all the posts. Using the same level and another person to help, pour the quick setting cement into each post hole. Have your helper hold the post straight (check with a level) and slowly add water as directed on the package. Have your helper continue to hold the posts until the cement starts to set, should take only a few minutes. Allow the posts to set overnight.

Step 3:

Using a drill and screws, attach the cross pieces to the posts at the inside of the fence.

Step 4:

Attach with nails or screws whatever material you chose to use as pickets to the cross piece. Use a measuring tape to mark equal distances that are pleasing to your eye; remember, this is a country fence. You can use traditional pickets, branches or even scrap wood all cut to the same size as the "pickets".

Done! Plant a climbing plant at the base to add old fashioned country charm such as morning glories or a climbing rose. With just a couple of sections of fence instead of a whole row of expensive fencing, you've added a wonderful architectural element to you garden!

Composting at Home

!±8± Composting at Home

More and more people are going back to basics and growing their own vegetables at home. Not only are they cheaper for them but better for the environment. Composting at home also has great benefits to the environment, and enables you to get rid of your food scraps. Composting this way provides you with healthy soil which will help you grow bigger and better crops.

A large number of people are now choosing to compost at home, they realize this is a better option than filling the landfills with food waste. The whole concept of composting at home may seem daunting, but it is very easy to do. Once your compost is established, it takes very little work and time but the benefits are huge. Once you get started then nature literally takes over, the hardest part is setting your compost pile up. It can take up to 12 months for your scraps to turn into soil, so you will have to be patient, and with small children this can difficult.

The easiest way to compost, is to have a small composting bin in your kitchen. Every time you finish a meal simply put your scraps in the bin, any food waste can go in there. Fruits and vegetables are ideal but, meats, bones and salty foods should be avoided. You can even put in coffee filters, shells and peels, all of these are great. It is very important to keep your kitchen compost bin covered or it will smell. If you don't like this option then you can carry your scraps out to the larger compost bin after every meal.

You can make a compost pile very easily; either simply piles the waste up although this could cause problems as the pile grows in size. The better option is to contain the waste in either a large drum, metal container or in a purpose built compost bin. These can be bought from your local gardening store. These can be as large or as small as you want; you will need to consider where in your yard you are aiming to place the compost bin. Although it is part of your garden you do not want it to dominate it. Your outdoor compost bin needs other things as well as waste food; it will need moisture so the food will decompose better. You will also need dry materials like, hay, straw or grass cuttings; these produce nitrogen which helps with the composting process. You can even place in small amounts of paper or cardboard.

You will need to place your compost bin in the direct sunlight, as the heat will speed up the decomposition process. Adding water to keep the compost moist is essential, but don't make it soggy, if you have ants in your pile then it is far too dry. Once a week you will need to turn the compost pile this allows air to penetrate the food scraps. A worry about home compost bins is that they smell, but surprisingly very little odor comes from them. If kept correctly, and looked after well you will have a fantastic home compost pile.

Weeds in the Compost Pile - Should You Worry?

!±8± Weeds in the Compost Pile - Should You Worry?

Should weeds go in the compost pile, especially those with seeds? This question is bound to arise in midsummer as a bumper crop of weeds hits most gardeners. Here are some thoughts on the matter but you have to make up your own mind.

First of all, it would appear that weeds that have not gone to seed would all be safe to use for compost. However, the gardener needs to look at the plant itself. Chances are that an annual weed that has been uprooted and the roots allowed to dry will be dead before it hit the pile. Perennial weeds are a different sort all together.

Their roots are likely to survive a long time. In appearance they will often be white and thick with moisture retentive properties, ready to wait until circumstances allow them to sprout and spread, circumstances like the edges of a compost pile with warmth, moisture and food. Actually, they may be more trouble than weeds with thousands of viable seeds.

After all we are told that every cubic foot of soil has millions of seeds. Even if there is only one million weed seeds in a cubic foot of your garden soil, and that only the ones in the top inch will sprout, that means that there are five hundred seventy-eight weeds ready to sprout in every square inch of garden soil. How much difference will a few more seeds per cubic foot make?

Balance this with the knowledge that those weeds represent a great source of nitrogen for the compost pile. Plus, their roots have gone deep and long to capture a lot of mineral content for the soil which you can now move into the bins to enrich the topsoil later. Just as carrots and corn will gather both similar and different things from the soil, so do different weeds and thus a good mix of weeds for the compost pile implies a richer pile by far. Also the quick composters must remember that a fast pile is a hot pile and this will kill a lot of the seeds and the perennial roots as well.

So the plants that we call weeds may be a nuisance in the garden but a treasure in the compost bins. As the mystery of composting happens in the back yard, the treasure of weeds becomes the black gold of compost.
